What is OptiSchool

OptiSchool is a FREE web-based instructional tool developed by the Angel Ramos Foundation. OptiSchool's primary goals are:

  1. Teach parents of Deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) children American Sign Language (ASL) so they can better communicate with their D/HH children;

  2. Help D/HH children obtain the vocabulary and reading skills they need prior to entering kindergarten; and

  3. Help D/HH children READ and SUCCEED.

Although OptiSchool is developed primarily for D/HH children and their parents, the lessons can be used by hearing children as well:

  1. Pre-school programs can use the lessons to teach hearing pre-schoolers ASL.

  2. Elementary teachers can use the lessons to teach their hearing students ASL, the 3rd most spoken language in America.

There are two parts to OptiSchool: the (1) lessons and the (2) picture dictionary. Each lesson teaches six signs. The picture dictionary allows you to download drawings of the signs being taught. Students can color the drawings and make their own ASL dictionary.

Both the OptiSchool lessons and the picture dictionary drawings are FREE thanks to the donations made by individuals and businesses to the Foundation. If OptiSchool benefits you and/or your D/HH child, please consider making a donation to the Angel Ramos Foundation so that we can continue helping others.
